It's Over in Five for 'Angel'
(Friday, February 13 04:53 PM)
By Kate O'Hare

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Early Friday (Feb. 13) an announcement was made to the cast and crew at The WB's "Angel" that this season, the show's fifth, will be its last.

"It's official enough to know it's real," David Greenwalt, who co-created the series with Joss Whedon, tells Zap2it.com, "but I haven't talked to anybody at the network or the studio. I can tell you that it's real, that it makes Mr. Whedon and myself very sad, that we wish it had kept going and we thought it was only getting better.

"Joss and [executive producer]Jeff Bell told the cast and crew today. We have no understanding of the inner workings of the corporate world, but we've had a long and fruitful relationship with [producing studio] 20th Century Fox and The WB, for which we are grateful. We just wish it could have gone on forever. Apparently, it's not going to.

"Joss literally called me this morning; so it's very new."

This news comes on the heels of airing the 100th episode of the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" spin-off, the taping of which was marked by a party on the show's sets last November.

At that time, the WB's entertainment chief, Jordan Levin, said, "The work that you all do, I cannot thank you enough. This is something that will last. You can see it in the DVD sales. You see it in the fans. They give an incredible amount of attention to almost everything.

"You've created a cult here, and it's pretty wonderful to be a part of it. So thank you and congratulations."

It's the network's regard for the show that prompted it to give the producers an early enough heads up for a proper send-off at the end of the season.

"Like some of the great series that are leaving the air this year, including 'Frasier' and 'Friends,' the cast, crew, writers and producers of 'Angel' deserve to be able to wrap up the series in a way befitting a classic television series, and that is why we went to Joss to let him know that this would be the last year of the series on The WB," the network says in a statement. "We have discussed continuing the Angel legacy with special movie events next year, which is still on the table. "

Next week, on Wednesday, Feb. 18, "Angel" airs one of its most innovative episodes, called "Smile Time." Written and directed by Ben Edlund ("The Tick"), and based on an idea by Whedon, (SPOILER) <font class='spoiler'>it sees the show&#39;s title character, a crusading vampire with a soul, forced to fight evil after being transformed into a walking puppet (with voice by series star David Boreanaz).</font>

"It&#39;s so brilliant," Greenwalt says. "I just love it. It&#39;s one of the finest pieces of filmmaking I&#39;ve ever seen. It just cracked me up. It&#39;s so ridiculous and silly, and yet there&#39;s all this heartfelt stuff in it. It&#39;s just quintessential Whedon.

"But wait until you see the episode that follows it in terms of abject heartbreak. It&#39;s just searing."

Greenwalt stepped away from "Angel" a few years ago but has remained a consulting producer. Since then, he&#39;s worked on two short-lived but critically acclaimed series, ABC&#39;s "Miracles" and UPN&#39;s "Jake 2.0." But he&#39;s contemplating a possible return to his old stomping ground.

"I might just go direct episode 20 [of &#39;Angel&#39;]," he says, "so I can say my farewell to everybody. That&#39;s something that might happen."

As to the future of the show&#39;s star, The WB says, "David Boreanaz continues to be one of the finest, classiest and friendliest actors we have had the pleasure to work with and we hope that the relationship furthers from here.

"The same can be said for all the actors and producers on the show. "

Nachtrag
Offizielles Statement von WB:

IMPORTANT NEWS ABOUT ANGEL

A statement from The WB:
For the last seven years Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer have been cornerstones of our network. The sum total of the work done on those shows has produced some of the proudest moments in our history. Like some of the great series that are leaving the air this year, including Frasier and Friends, the cast, crew, writers and producers of Angel deserve to be able to wrap up the series in a way befitting a classic television series and that is why we went to Joss to let him know that this would be the last year of the series on The WB. We have discussed continuing the Angel legacy with special movie events next year, which is still on the table. In a perfect world, all of these details would be completed before this information went to the press so that we could be definitive about the show&#39;s ongoing future. But in any case, we did not want to contemplate this being the last year of Angel without giving the show the option of crafting their own destiny for this character and for this series. David Boreanaz continues to be one of the finest, classiest and friendliest actors we have had the pleasure to work with and we hope that the relationship furthers from here. The same can be said for all the actors and producers on the show.

JA, mein Herz ist gebrochen&#33;

Als Buffy endete war es zwar ein Schlag, aber ich habe die Serie ziehen lassen. Als Firefly eingestellt wurde, habe ich es dermaßen verdrängt, sodass ich mit der Idee des Films aufwartete. Aber Angel... wir dachten wirklich dass wir an der Spitze wären – über uns hinausgewachsen sind – um dann festzustellen, dass wir geradewegs in einen Abgrund voller Schlangen und Lava gefallen sind. Ich bin so eng mit diesen Charakteren, den Schauspielern und der ganzen Situation die wir kreiert haben verbunden. Ihr wollt wissen wie ich mich fühle? ... Schaut euch den ersten Akt von „The Body“ (Tod einer Mutter) an&#33;

Verdammt“

Wir sehen uns bald&#33;

Angel: Es wird gekämpft werden&#33;

This "Angel" has gone to heaven.

The WB has opted not to renew the Joss Whedon-produced drama "Angel" for a sixth season. Frog topper Jordan Levin informed Whedon of the decision to cancel the skein Thursday night.

Move on the surface is a head-scratcher. Twentieth Century Fox TV-produced skein is the net&#39;s second highest-rated hour among viewers 18-34 (behind lead-in "Smallville") and fourth among auds 12-34. Its numbers have been solid this year, even against brutal competish on Wednesday night and in a year in which the WB is experiencing double-digit Nielsen declines.

But Frog execs are also facing the reality of an aging sked, with skeins such as "Charmed," "7th Heaven" and "Gilmore Girls" potentially facing final seasons next year.

Levin also said the rapidly changing economics of network television played a big role in the decision to end "Angel." Skein doesn&#39;t repeat well, and Levin anticipates having to double run one or more dramas in primetime next season --- as well as add more reality programs to the Frog&#39;s mix.

"We have a lot of veteran shows that are aging, and we&#39;re going to have to make room for new programs," Levin said. "I know this will make lots of fans unhappy. But we have to have more at-bats, and we need to create timeslots where we can repeat shows (the same week episodes premiere.)"

"This isn&#39;t about the WB bailing out on one of its top shows," Levin added. "The show had a loyal core following, but it didn&#39;t have a tremendous amount of new audience upside."

All parties involved said the cost of the show itself was not the central factor in the decision to cancel "Angel." The WB made waves three years ago when it decided to part ways with Whedon&#39;s "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" after a squabble with 20th over its license fee.

Whedon said that while he understands the business part of the decision, he&#39;s nonetheless "heartbroken."

"I thought that if a show was really good and doing really well (in the ratings), it was renewed," scribe said. "I was apparently misinformed."

Whatever the intricacies of the Frog&#39;s business model, Whedon said the decision to axe "Angel" doesn&#39;t seem logical.

"I do understand the business of it," he said. "But to me, when they&#39;re scrambling to hold on to their audience, their revenue, their dignity, it doesn&#39;t seem the best decision. And it&#39;s certainly not the classiest."

"If there&#39;s no place for quality in the equation, I don&#39;t know why we&#39;re here," Whedon added.

Dana Walden, prexy of 20th, said she understands the WB&#39;s point of view, even if she&#39;s disappointed by the net&#39;s decision.

"I can see their perspective. Jordan has been very honest about the decision-making process," Walden said. "(But) when a show works on your air, you have to find ways to keep it there. Shame on all of us for not finding a way.... There are a lot of disappointed fans."

Levin said he and Whedon started talking about the show&#39;s future a few weeks ago, right around the time of the show&#39;s 100th episode party. Conversations about the changing state of the TV business left open the possibility that "Angel" --- despite its creative and ratings strength --- might not be a slam-dunk to return.

"He said he wanted to protect his cast and crew, and asked if I could let them know sooner rather than later," Levin said. "These are usually decisions you wait until the last minute to make. But after &#39;Dawson&#39;s Creek,&#39; I saw how important closure was for a cast, and given Joss&#39; request, I owed him (an early decision.) It was a very bittersweet parting and an end of an era for us," Levin added. "I have the ultimate respect for Joss as someone who created two landmark series and stood behind them the whole time."

Because ratings and reviews have been solid for "Angel" this season, Whedon said his cast and crew were "stunned" when he broke the news to them Friday. "Nobody saw this coming," he said.

On the positive side, with casting season just heating up, the show&#39;s thesps will now have time to line up projects for next season.

Whedon said he and "Angel" exec producer-showrunner Jeff Bell have already mapped out the series finale, which Bell is slated to helm. Whedon continues to explore the possibility of a feature based on his short-lived Fox skein "Firefly."

As for "Angel," Whedon said he was glad the show passed the 100 episode milestone, and grateful to Walden and 20th prexy Gary Newman for their support during a two-year frame that saw the natural end of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Firefly" and now the end of "Angel."

While there&#39;s already talk of some "Angel" telepics, Whedon said it&#39;s too soon for him to imagine such a possibility.

"All we have left on &#39;Angel&#39; is to end the season with episodes as strong and meaningful as we can muster," Whedon said. "But then, we were going to do that anyway."

Ich bin zwar noch nicht so lange im Thema (kenne aber bisher BtVS Seasons 1-5 und Angel 1-3), aber gerade Angel ist mir doch sehr ans Herz gewachsen. Die Serie verhielt sich zu Buffy immer wie DS9 zu TNG... Dunkler, geheimnisvoller, epischer, reiferer Humor... einfach viel, viel besser&#33;

@ Rocket Man:

Es wiedermal super gaga was WB da veranstalltet die wissen echt nicht was sie tun&#33;

und das obwohl in der 5ten staffel die quoten superschön angestiegen sind weil seit Joss wieder für Angel schreibt wurde sie von folge zur folge immer besser düsterer,selbst ironischer und inovativer als je zuvor&#33;&#33;

Reaktionen der Schauspieler von Angel auf die Absetzung&#33;

Nun mal nicht so pessimistisch Mr. Bell. Noch ist alles offen&#33;

Mutant Enemy Confirms &#39;Angel&#39; Demise
Author: Michael Hinman
Date: 03-04-2004
Source: IGN FilmForce

The IGN FilmForce Web site has confirmed that UPN has indeed passed on the "Angel" series, based on an earlier rumor report originating at SyFy Portal.

"Fans behind the Save Angel movement have asked fans to stop sending messages to UPN, further indicating that the future of the series is dim," IGN FilmForce reported. "Co-executive producer Jeffrey Bell told IGN FilmForce last weekend that any decision by UPN would be based on their financial situation. That situation has been in steady decline over the past several years, partially due to an exceptionally high license fee paid by the network to Fox for the rights to &#39;Buffy the Vampire Slayer&#39;s&#39; final season."

SyFy Portal first reported on the rumor earlier this week. (original story)

"The show is just too far in its lifespan to really make decent money on it," a Viacom source told SyFy Portal. "It was a mistake for UPN to grab &#39;Buffy&#39; so late, and it ended up costing (the network) money."

The WB cancelled "Angel" last month, effective at the end of the current season. In the announcement, The WB said it wanted to give the series a chance to end the way the producers want it to end, and that this would be a fitting way to do it. After the cancellation, the producers apparently opened up talks with UPN, but even at the beginning, some people connected to the show admitted that earning a UPN pickup was a "long shot."

Please note that despite the confirmation from Mutant Enemy, there still has been no official announcement made by anyone, so please treat this as you would any other rumor.

Gute Nachrichten?

Season 6 doch bei The WB?

In diesem Sinne...

Save Angel&#33;

Gellar Still Open To &#39;Angel&#39; Appearance
Author: Michael Hinman
Date: 03-03-2004
Source: Sci-Fi Wire

It&#39;s almost completely unlikely that Sarah Michelle Gellar will return to "Angel" on The WB to reprise her role as vampire slayer Buffy Summers one last time. But the actress said not to blame her.

"A lot has been written about recently, &#39;Oh, is she going to do it? Is she not going to do it?&#39;" Gellar told Sci-Fi Wire. "Well, to be truthful, I don&#39;t know if I&#39;m even going to make it home before they finish. But no one&#39;s contacted me. I&#39;ll be totally honest."

Gellar, who is currently filming "The Grudge" in Tokyo, said that reports over why she didn&#39;t appear in an earlier episode of "Angel" as planned has been misconstrued by the press. She said her main reason for pulling out was the fact that her aunt died around the time she was supposed to be committing to the project.

"They had asked me to do &#39;Angel,&#39; and it was a very bad time in my personal life," Gellar said. "There was a lot going on in my family. And I had to back out. And you sort of never hear the second side of the story. You never hear why I didn&#39;t do it. And then, all of a sudden, people get really angry, and nobody asks why it didn&#39;t work for you."

While Gellar said it&#39;s untrue that she wants to distance herself from the franchise, she did express concern on how her character&#39;s return in the final episode of "Angel" would affect the overall perception of the show.

"I go back and forth on the idea, especially because &#39;Angel&#39; had such a hard time, in my opinion, always getting out from Buffy&#39;s shadow," Gellar said. "And it never got to stand on its own. And I would hate for it to go out being about Buffy.

"It&#39;ll all depend on if I&#39;m home in time, and what the ideas are."

Der britsiche Sender Sky One enthüllt: WB verhandelt mit Joss&#33;

ACHTUNG: SPOILER

From oracle3: Do you have any news at all on Angel? I&#39;ve been praying for the WB to have a change of heart. And how awesome was "Shells"? I loved it from start to finish&#33;
Amazing. Sadly, I&#39;m still hearing that UPN isn&#39;t likely to pick up the show. But I think you&#39;ll be pleased with the Save One Show campaign results coming out Friday. Definitely a lot of support for our Wolfram & Hart friends.

From filter117: What are your impressions of Illyria?
That she is pretty much an evil-Willow knockoff, which is exactly the request Amy Acker issued (through me&#33;) when I asked her what she wanted for her character last summer. I don&#39;t love her or hate Illyria (though clearly I want my Fred back), but that just makes me laugh.

From rene_artois: Bonjour, mi amore&#33; Any idea if Fred-Illyria is this season&#39;s Big Bad on Angel? Or is it gonna be someone else entirely? If you ask me, it should be the network execs that Angel kicks the crap out of...
Now that would be priceless. Here&#39;s what I&#39;ve heard: There is a Big Bad other than Illyria. But I can&#39;t tell you who.

From hostrov1: Do you have any information on Connor&#39;s return to Angel?
Two episodes out, he comes back. Turns out he has endured some implanted memories, thanks to a new warlock, Vail, who used to work for Wolfram & Hart. He&#39;s now head of a demon clan working to take over Hell-Ay (L.A.), and Vail admits to Angel that he was trying to kill his son, in effort to help Connor understand what he is. But how does Vail know anything about Connor? Because, likey me said, Vail was the one who created Connor&#39;s memories. Vail wants Sahjhan dead, while Angel tells him that the demon is locked away in an urn, afraid that if the urn breaks, the demon will return. And Angel explains that only one person in the universe can kill Sahjhan--and that&#39;s Connor.

Wenn Angel sogar prominente Hilfe bekommt und selbst bei WB Unstimmigkeiten über die Absetzung herrschen, können die Chancen garnicht so schlecht stehen&#33;

TV Guide hat wieder was geschrieben.

I smell somethin&#39; fishy--and it ain&#39;t Chicken of the Sea. We all know Joss Whedon has said Sarah Michelle Gellar is not returning to Angel. And according to a show rep, Michelle Trachtenberg and Alyson Hannigan "aren&#39;t likely" to return, because Michelle is shooting an ice-skating movie for Disney and Alyson&#39;s busy doing a play in London--When Harry Met Sally, with Luke Perry.

Butt&#33; (And this is a J.Lo-circa-Selena-size one.) One look at the Royal Theater Haymarket Website and you&#39;ll see something rather interesting: "At all performances between Mar. 17 and Apr. 3 inclusive, the role of Sally will be played by Elizabeth Jasicki. Alyson Hannigan appears at all other performances."

Turns out, Alyson is currently in Los Angeles, shooting a pilot called Untitled Tarses/Wrubel Project (now that&#39;s catchy)--this is the same NBC sitcom David Schwimmer is directing.

Now, perhaps this is just my delusional wishful thinking, but this smacks of counter-spoiler hoodwinkery to me. I&#39;d bet my TiVo remote (but not the whole box) that since Alyson is in town when they happen to be taping the final episodes, she will (fingers crossed) find it in her heart to squeeze in some sort of Angelic appearance next to her real-life hubby, Alexis Denisof.

And who knows? Maybe some other familiar faces are being held under wraps as well. Again, this is possibly a big ol&#39; delusion of a tube-stunted mind, so we shall see.

Meanwhile, while we&#39;re blabbin&#39; Angel, I simply must hand out big props to the folks over at savingangel.com, who continue to amaze us media types (and, I hope, network decision-maker types) with their all-out, take-no-prisoners campaign to save the show. Just this week, I&#39;ve seen the "Save Angel" billboard truck cruise by my very window three times, and I received a big ol&#39; yummy box of "Save Angel" chocolate bars. I&#39;ll share &#39;em with Giuliana and Patrick on the weekend edition of E&#33; News Live, for the whole world (or at least my mom and the other three people watching) to see. You guys rule&#33;

E-Online&#33; (http://www.eonline.com/Gossip/Kristin/Archive2004/040402c.html)

<font class='spoiler'>From slayergirl3: Man, I don&#39;t know how I&#39;m going to make it till the next Angel episode. Is Christian Kane really in it? Mmm, I hope so&#33;
That is what I&#39;ve heard. Also, in the May 12 episode, Senatorminator Bruckner wants Angel to brainwash her opponent into becoming a pedophile, guaranteeing her reelection. We also see some familiar faces from previous episodes of Angel.

From park450: Are Andrew, Eve, Lindsey, Dru, Darla, Anne and Connor all coming back?
Yup.</font>

Buffy/Angel TV Film Possible?

The WB has approached Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel creator Joss Whedon about doing at least a movie-of-the-week or two - and possibly as many as six - next season, thanks in large part to a fan campaign organized by Saving Angel, E&#33; Online&#39;s Watch With Kristin column reported. But the columnist added that, despite Herculean efforts by fans to save the canceled vampire show, Angel won&#39;t be coming back as a regular series, either on the frog network or on UPN or Fox, which have both passed.

"I think a Buffy movie is more likely to happen now," Angel cast member James Marsters (Spike) told the columnist. "And they may be given better budgets, seeing this kind of interest, because there&#39;s a feeling that there&#39;s a guaranteed audience. So the effort that I&#39;ve seen, it is not in vain."

Also erstmal:
Wohoo. Hoffentlich wird was draus.

Währenddessen plant The WB wohl schon weiter.

Das ist die Insider-Meldung:

WB arbeitet an einem Projekt, dem neuen Film ANGEL, der voraussichtlich im September ausgestrahlt werden soll. Dieser erste Film ist ein wesentliches Projekt der Serie- er wird eingeführt mit neuen Gegnern und anderen Story, jeder einzelne&#33;

Ich denke der große Lastwagen, den ich letzte Woche hab rumfahren sehn, hat etwas zur Rettung der Show gebracht&#33;

Fan Fervor Runneth Over to Save Angel--See What Good Has Come of It

I used to consider myself the most die-hard TV fan on the planet. It was a badge I wore with pride, sorta like my "I heart Bo & Luke Duke" T-shirt back in the good ol&#39; days of the good ol&#39; boys. (Sigh.)

But you "Save Angel" folks put me to shame.

This week, even though we asked readers to send in questions for the huuugest show on television right now, The Apprentice (those answers are coming Tuesday), you Angel fans still managed to send in more queries than people asking what the bejesus is up with the Donald&#39;s hair. And that&#39;s saying something.

You&#39;ve written letters. You&#39;ve sent flowers. You&#39;ve organized blood drives and food drives and candy-bar drives and truck drive-by drives. You&#39;ve raised thousands for ads in the Hollywood Reporter and Variety and given the show more publicity in a month than it received in five years at the WB.

Your fervor amazes me...and it breaks my heart.

For weeks now, I&#39;ve been trying to break it to you gently that, sadly, there is no promising news about the fate of Angel. And still, you keep asking. And asking. And asking. To the point where I want to cry because I so badly wish I had something good say.

Instead, I think I&#39;ll just tell you the truth on where Angel stands.

I&#39;ve spent considerable time over the past few weeks talking to network, studio and production insiders, as well as a few of the actors (we&#39;ll get to them below), and I can tell you this with a fair amount of certainty:

Angel is not coming back. At least not as the weekly TV series we now know and love. It sucks, and it&#39;s wretched and wrong. But the sooner we all accept that, the sooner we can move on.

Now, I know from my dear friend Mary that a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, so here are two of the sweetest people I know (no dookie) to give it to you straight.

"It&#39;s over," James Marsters (Spike) told me Wednesday. "And we&#39;ve known for a while. It was a shock. I&#39;ve never in my wildest dreams thought they would do that. But it&#39;s their game, their football, and it seems they want to pass it to someone else."

An emotional Amy Acker (Fred) also weighed in Thursday before going to set for her final day of shooting. "I guess they had just sort of decided the cancellation was for good, at a point. So, it seems so sad all these people were working so hard and nothing happened. The whole thing has been so sweet, and we all have been like, &#39;Oh maybe it will work&#33;&#39; But it seems like they&#39;re pretty set in their way."

That&#39;s the consensus I&#39;ve gotten from various sources -- the WB suits aren&#39;t changing their minds on Angel. Though the cancellation seemed like a whack-job, crack-induced whim to us fans, Frog net insiders tell me the higher-ups feel strongly that Angel had "limited moneymaking potential," due to limited advertising revenue and what they consider to be a substantial budget. The fan base is clearly devoted, but these bigwigs see little hope of that audience expanding.

The final stake through Angel&#39;s heart? Dark Shadows, that remade vampire series the bigwigs believe to have "vast potential." Presumably because the man behind it is John Wells (ER, West Wing). If J.W. created a series about three young witches or, say, a reverend&#39;s family, things may have been different.

Meanwhile, UPN and Fox have both passed on Angel. UPN has a strict new edict not to pick up "other networks&#39; scraps" (the same message given to the producers of Wonderfalls, though when you read on you&#39;ll find some promising news on that). And even if they did want these "scraps," quite frankly they can&#39;t afford &#39;em. As for Fox, well, one look at its midseason lineup and you know they&#39;re going for a slightly different angle than quality scripted television. Littlest Groom, anyone?

I&#39;m told the feeling on set is not morose these days--but rather like graduation. Though it&#39;s been rip-out-your-heart difficult, the actors are learning to accept the show&#39;s fate and move on.

"I&#39;m used to things being over," James said. "Coming from theater, I&#39;m used to plays being wonderful or less than wonderful, and even if they&#39;re fabulous, they do have to come to an end. And you kind of come to a point where you&#39;re at peace with that."

And I can&#39;t help but mention that David Boreanaz seemed ready to move on before the show was even canceled: "I&#39;m really itching to explore other characters and do other projects," he told me in January. "I think I&#39;ve been stuck in this medical school for a while, and I need to open up and get out."

Not so much the case for Amy. She admits she&#39;s the weepy one. "I just keep crying, and everyone is like, &#39;Stop it&#33; Or I&#39;ll cry, too.&#39; It&#39;s hard because last Friday was Alexis&#39; last night, and yesterday was Andy&#39;s last day. And today will be everyone&#39;s. It&#39;s hard to imagine you won&#39;t be spending 12 hours a day with them anymore."

All that said, you Save Angel folks, please, for the love of TiVo, do not despair. Though the campaign might not have accomplished exactly what we&#39;d hoped, James points out that it managed to do something else truly magnificent.

"It may not have saved the show," he explained, "but what it does for the entire cast and crew is give us a little pop as we go out. Everyone takes notice that we connected well enough with the audience to give them that passion...And I have to tell you, it feels so good. After all these years of, frankly, battling time and money and always having to give up what you were planning to do and getting frustrated, at the end of it, to see everyone really going out of their way to try and save it, it just feels really, really good. So, big warm vampire fuzzies over here. It really took the sting out of getting canceled."

And really, after five years of stellar television, it seems the least we could do, no?

"I just want to say to the fans, thank you," Amy says. "I think that [Save Angel] has been so awesome and it has made us feel better when we&#39;ve all been so sad. For people to come up and say, &#39;Did you hear there&#39;s a rally today?&#39; or &#39;I saw the big poster today.&#39; That has been as comforting as it could ever be."

Still, the best news is this: According to sources, the finale is supremely open-ended (Amy says it "opens new doors" and "doesn&#39;t tie up any strings"), and I hear the Powers That Be at the WB have approached Joss Whedon about doing at least a movie-of-the-week or two (possibly as many as six) next season--thanks in large part to the folks at Save Angel. "I think a Buffy movie, or an Angel movie-of-the-week is more likely to happen now," James said, "and they may be given better budgets, seeing this kind of interest, because there&#39;s a feeling that there&#39;s a guaranteed audience. So, the effort that I&#39;ve seen, it is not in vain."

Rumor Patrol: While we&#39;re in the mood for telling it like it is when it comes to Angel, we should address a few more burning Q&#39;s for any and all conspiracy theorists.

1. Sarah Michelle Gellar isn&#39;t evil, just busy. She truly wanted to guest but couldn&#39;t make it back in time for episode 21, because she was shooting a movie in Japan and had commitments to Scooby-Doo. Sarah said she was available to do episode 22, but Joss already knew exactly what he wanted to do for the finale (and it sounds genius). They then tried to reverse the shooting of the two episodes, but it was logistically impossible to get everything together in time. (Joss hadn&#39;t even written the script.) So, put simply, it didn&#39;t work out.

2. Alyson Hannigan, Michelle Trachtenberg and Sarah Michelle Gellar really are not coming back. Unless this is the mother of all foilers, and/or all my sources are bold-faced liars, these three lovelies all had to decline because of other commitments. Alyson was doing a play and a new pilot, Michelle a Disney movie, and S.M.G. had the aforementioned non-evil conflicts.

3. The finale won&#39;t suck. Despite the surprise cancellation and guest-star disappointments, from everything I&#39;ve heard, Joss really pulled through on the series ender. "The characters are in self-doubt and self-conflict and at each other&#39;s throats," James said of the finale. "I really didn&#39;t think there was any way for these characters to overcome what they were facing, frankly. And it&#39;s really suspenseful as to whether they can or can&#39;t. It&#39;s gonna be bloody, and people are going to get hurt. It&#39;s a Joss Whedon finale, man--blood and tears and death."

E-Online&#33; (http://www.eonline.com/Gossip/Kristin/Archive2004/040416.html)

<font class='spoiler'>From rocketboy: What is Dark Shadows?
It&#39;s a remake of old vampire TV show that&#39;s coming to the WB, which is helmed by John Wells and is a big ol&#39; slap in the face of Angel.

From hostrov1: So you think Angel was canceled because of Dark Shadows?
As I said in my last column, I think Angel might have stayed another season had John Wells created a non-vampire show. It wasn&#39;t the only reason Angel was canceled, but it sure didn&#39;t help. Make sure you read the column to get the lowdown on where Angel stands.

From larrypigtails: Angel death?&#33; Just read your column, and James Marsters says there&#39;s a death in the final episode. Who is it?
You mean: Who are they? I hear there are two deaths in the finale--and both of these guys are hotter than fire.

From platypirock: Any hope of getting Fred back, ever (this season or in future movies)? Or is it Illyria forever?
Amy&#39;s in blue makeup until the very end--which means Illyria prevails. However, we see a moment of her turning into Fred. She mourns the loss of a loved one for a brief moment as her former self.

From jar4386465: Gah&#33; It&#39;s Wesley isn&#39;t it? Wesley&#39;s one of the Angel deaths?
That&#39;s what I&#39;ve heard, yes.</font>

Und nun wieder Auszüge, Angel betreffend, aus dem letzten Chat mit Kristin von E-Online. Und Joss macht seinem Ruf wohl wieder alle Ehre, die Fans bis ins Mark zu schocken. Achtung: MEGA SPOILER&#33;

<font class='spoiler'>From PunkDiva: Is the WB really going to do an Angel movie next season?
From what I understand, the WB has approached Joss about doing movies, but so far, nothing has been decided. He has a lot going on with the Firefly movie, and the network execs are putting together the fall schedule, so it may take some time to iron out any sort of deal. Be patient, mon petit fromage.

Angel: Wesley dies.
TRUE. And I think I might die a little, too--oh, how I love Weslexis...I cannot begin to say. As Wes is dying, Illyria changes once more into Fred and mourns over him. It&#39;s heartbreaking.

From seba_88: Who&#39;s the other character that dies on Angel? Gunn?
That&#39;s what I&#39;ve heard, yes.

From nancyfene: Any more Angel?

Jeff Bell told already, that Joss planned to bring Seth back in season 6, for the role of Oz.
It makes sense, because due to the fact that there is this werewolf girl Nina, Oz would be perfect to be her helper, because he knows how to handle his little secret. Nina, for herself, seems to be alone, after this season..anywhere on a beach vacation with her sister.

But hey, this is not everything, that was coming up about Season 6.
There were rumors about Willow, returning to Angel, and &#39;whooosch&#39;...Jeff also told, that she was planned.

I&#39;m quite sure, Willow was planned, for Illyria, cause in another interview Amy said, it was planned to split Illyria and Fred, so Amy was going to play a double role on Angel...very interesting thing.

At least, they even planned to play in another dimension, for the first episodes, after or during the fight against the dragon of the lawyer firm Wolfram & Hart.

*GOSH*

I can&#39;t help myself, but knowing that these things were planned, the descision to cancel Angel, after such a strong season, seems more and more blindfolded.

Let&#39;s cross our fingers, and hope, that anything happens to let Joss fulfill his dreams and plans for season 6 in any case&#33;

An Angelic Farewell: Don&#39;t know about you, but I&#39;m still in shock that Angel is really ending. The very last episode--why, dear God, why?--is this Wednesday. (Which makes me realize you Bachelor fans will be taping that finale in order to witness the end of the best damn universe ever created on the small screen. Right?)

According to Amy Acker (Fred), the finale will "tear you up inside." She said, "I think you&#39;ll experience every emotion. It leaves this whole new door open, and it&#39;s not tying up all the strings, you know?"

As you may have heard, that open door could (fingers crossed) lead to a few Angel or Buffy movies of the week next season. "We have talked about it," creator Joss Whedon said. "So far, that&#39;s still just talk...But I think there&#39;s definitely room for some of the characters, and I won&#39;t tell which ones. Because there is some attrition. This is not a clean getaway. It&#39;s an ugly fight."

Amy, J. August Richards (Gunn) and James Marsters (Spike) have all said they&#39;d jump at the chance to do an Angel movie. "I would love the opportunity to reprise the character," Richards told me. "Even though his, um, fate is a little, um, unclear." (Eek.)

David Boreanaz (Angel), on the other hand, might not be so willing to rejoin the Frog net: "The only thing I&#39;d be interested in is if the bar was set at a higher standard...I wouldn&#39;t be interested in doing anything for the WB or, you know, a movie of the week or something. I just don&#39;t think that would be right. It would have to be a film or that&#39;s probably it."

Still, David (who might head to London this summer to star onstage in When Harry Met Sally) said he&#39;s beyond grateful for all the fan support. "We&#39;ve got the best fans in the world. These guys are die-hard and have always been there for us. The Save Angel campaign didn&#39;t surprise me at all, because when I found out [the show was canceled], I said, &#39;The fans are going to go nuts.&#39; "

And nuts we did go. For the record, we aren&#39;t the only ones supremely disappointed. "I hate the decision," Whedon says of the cancellation. "You know, it shows that a relationship that really was extraordinary, mutually important, can be defeated by the simplest of numbers. And that is, in fact, the reality of show business, but one doesn&#39;t like to be reminded of that."

And here&#39;s the part that gets me weepy: This cast is tight-knit and truly special. When asked what they&#39;ll miss most about being on Angel, every single cast member gave the exact same response: "The people." And I have to agree.

From rene_artois: Bonjour, mon petit fromage. I can&#39;t believe that, come next season, we won&#39;t have any Whedon-made shows on our beloved tube. In appreciation for your excellent spoilage over the years, I have arranged for Michael Vartan, Bradley Cooper, James Marsters and Peter Krause to dance in an exotic manner for you, for one whole evening. It&#39;s the least I can do.

Why, thank you. I&#39;ll have my &#036;1 bills standing by.

From mrdazzo707: Hey, how about the Angel finale? Will it live up to our rabid expectations?

I think so, yes. But it really depends on how you feel about unresolved issues. It looks good, though the ending is very much open-ended and doesn&#39;t really tie up any loose strings. It&#39;s sort of a regular episode (à la the Friends finale), though a very good regular episode at that. And it definitely leaves the door wide open to any WB movies of the week, should we be so lucky.

From weeveee: What will happen on the Angel finale?

It&#39;s next Wednesday--can you believe it? I&#39;m still in denial. Wes, Gunn and the rest of the gang will be seriously questioning Angel&#39;s motives. They think he&#39;s a traitor because he&#39;s hanging around the Circle of the Black Thorn and turning down philanthropic cases in favor of protecting evil-doers. They start to believe he may be a traitor, but it turns out that Angel is just doing some sniffing around to see how he can get to the Senior Partners. And he will find out there is a real traitor among them.

From staff: What happened to Gramercy Park, the pilot that Samaire Armstrong shot after she left The O.C.?

It&#39;s a no-go. Why is no one talking about Angel? Are you too disappointed to speak?

From coriander817: What did you think of the Angel series finale?

I was disappointed, to be honest; I thought it was a pile o&#39; steaming dung. I know Joss had his beef with Sarah Michelle Gellar wanting to be on the finale, but I sorta wish he had let her--it would have added some much-needed oomph. Did anyone like it?

<font class='spoiler'>From Jason_15: Regarding the last Angel episode: What in the blue hell was that? No battle for the ages, no earth-shattering events, no cool cameos--tell me this is not over or I&#39;m gonna die. I need closure&#33; What do you know about the movie-of-the-week deal? Give me something&#33;

I wish I had something to give. I can only tell you that I saw it coming when Joss told us they did the best they could under the time and budget constraints. Usually he&#39;s confident, but he didn&#39;t seem so this time around. But don&#39;t blame Joss--blame the dubba dumba you be.</font>

From goduke1111: What did you think of the Angel finale--other than its obvious greatness?

Yay&#33; Nice to hear somebody liked it. I suppose my expectations were simply too high. (Pssst...Joss, is that you?)

From spikepoet: Why were you disappointed with the Angel finale? Was it the harsh ending or something else? I personally went a bit catatonic, but I still thought it rocked.

Okay, good, I feel better. Honestly, peeps, I watched it at 6 a.m. this morning after having spent eight hours waiting around at JFK Airport and then taking the red-eye cross-country, so I might not have been in the best state of mind. I&#39;ll give it another shot.

From beebee: Thank you for asking Jordan Levin what we&#39;ve all wanted to know: "What were you smoking when you canceled Angel?" Did he say anything else?

Actually--and it&#39;s awfully mean of me to tell you this--he actually answered the question twice. He was clearly nervous about answering and sort of sputtered out, asking if we could start over. (Maybe he realized he&#39;d made a mistake?) I sort of started feeling sorry for him, until I remembered that he had booted Angel for Drew Carey and Jeff Foxworthy.

From interntionalpuck: All these questions on Lost and not one on my super-important one: Is Angel coming back?
I don&#39;t think so, sweetie. Sorry.

From sjw: Did you see? The WB took down their Angel site&#33; How could they?&#33;
Yes, and I also just saw this: Variety is reporting that Jordan Levin is stepping down from the WB. Frankly, I&#39;m saddened, because with the exception of one monumental Angelic screwup, the guy did have good taste in programming, for the most part. Next season&#39;s shows (Jack and Bobby, The Mountain) are actually pretty good.

From slayergirl3: I&#39;m going to steal your TiVo if you don&#39;t answer me&#33; Naw, but really, did you watch the Angel finale again? What did you think of it? Do you still think it stunk?
Nooo, not my TiVo&#33; Frankly, I think it could have been better. I got the feeling Joss was so frustrated with the time and budget constraints, he sorta threw up his hands. Anyone agree?
