Flanigan on the future of Atlantis
TUESDAY - NOVEMBER 2, 2004

The Ancient city of Atlantis has plenty of secrets to be revealed in the second half of the season and in years to come, according to Stargate Atlantis star Joe Flanigan. In an interview with Sci Fi Wire, the actor talked about what may come in the show's development, assuming it gets the go-ahead for future season.

"What we'll find out is that Atlantis actually serves a higher purpose," Flanigan said, "but it will take a long time for us to figure out what that is. And we'll slowly see the city come to life and start living up to its potential, and then there will be an ultimate cosmic purpose to the city of Atlantis."

The article also reported that Season Two of Atlantis will begin filming in Vancouver, B.C. in February -- though the network has yet to formally announce that the show has been picked up for another year. SciFi.com subsequently removed the statement from the article.

Flanigan Sees Atlantis' Future

Joe Flanigan, who stars as Maj. John Sheppard on the SCI FI Channel original series Stargate Atlantis, told SCI FI Wire that the once-lost city of Atlantis will begin to reveal its secrets during the second half of the show's freshman season and on into the future. "On the overall level, what I want to see happen, and what will happen, is that the city of Atlantis is really remarkable," Flanigan said during an interview. "It's essentially what Manhattan would be if it were abandoned. If you can imagine the size of Manhattan and have it be just completely empty, it would take forever to explore that place."

Flanigan recently wrapped production on season one of Atlantis. "What we'll find out is that Atlantis actually serves a higher purpose, but it will take a long time for us to figure out what that is," he said. "And we'll slowly see the city come to life and start living up to its potential, and then there will be an ultimate cosmic purpose to the city of Atlantis. And that's a pretty interesting angle to explore. Of course, it's going to take a few seasons." Stargate Atlantis airs Friday nights at 10 p.m. ET/PT; the second half of season one will debut in January 2005.

Hm, ein paar neue Schiffe wären doch schon mal was. ;)

The Atlantis expedition may have found themselves stranded in the Pegasus Galaxy with no way to get home when the series premiered, but that doesn't mean things will always be that way. The hunt for a power source strong enough to establish a wormhole back to Earth is an on-going story arc in the show's freshman season, but executive producers Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper told GateWorld that this piece of the Stargate Atlantis story isn't intended to last the entire series.

"If everything goes according to plan, there will be a little bit of crossover right at the end of Season Eight and at the end of Atlantis [Season One]," Cooper said, "and the storylines will converge. And in Season Two of Atlantis there will be much more crossover between the worlds. They will no longer be isolated in Pegasus. There will be trips home to Earth, and characters from SG-1 visiting Atlantis, and so forth and so on. So it's not really the same as Voyager in that they're not always going to be trapped in Pegasus."

Dies geschah in der Atlantis Episode "Before I Sleep".
