In the final scene, Gideon goes inside a convenience store and, by chance,
spies a suspicious-looking character behind the counter who stutters. Seeing
various photographs of girls on a wall, Gideon believes the man could be a
threat, but warily leaves the store. As he walks toward the gas pumps, he sees
a reflection of the man pointing a gun behind him. He turns with his own gun
drawn, and the two exchange shots. The last shot was meant to confirm what
Gideon had told Hotchner earlier about serial killers: When one is caught,
another one is ready to take his place.
