Hoffentlich kommt da noch was.

The ground beneath our feet is spinning at a thousand miles an hour, the entire planet is hurtling around the sun at sixty-seven thousand miles an hour, and I can feel it. We're falling through space, you and me, clinging to the skin of this tiny little world, and if if we let go... that's who I am.

Oh my, was eine Überraschung!

Lost 1x14: "Special"

Inhalt:
Violence ensues and a mysterious island beast makes a re-appearance when Michael and Locke clash over Walt's upbringing. Meanwhile, Charlie is tempted to read the missing Claire's diary, and Sayid enlists Shannon to help decipher the French woman's map.

Unlocking the Philosophy of 'Lost'
(Sunday, January 23 12:01 AM)
By Kate O'Hare

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) On ABC's Wednesday castaway drama "Lost," con man Sawyer (Josh Holloway) sits on the beach reading Richard Adams' "Watership Down."

On its surface, the novel is about several rabbits that escape the destruction of their warren and traverse the English countryside to seek a new home. But the tale quickly becomes one of heroism, survival and friendship, and ultimately, the challenge of building a free society versus yielding to a totalitarian one. It's so much more than just bunnies on the run.

When ABC first announced "Lost," it sounded like a cross between "Survivor" and "Gilligan's Island," with plane-crash survivors on their way from Australia to Los Angeles stranded on a deserted tropical island. But before the pilot was over, the sudden appearance of a polar bear let you know, as co-creator (with Damon Lindelof) J.J. Abrams put it, "this place isn't normal."
Week by week, as the characters' histories are revealed in flashbacks, and as the island's deep strangeness makes itself gradually apparent, the show becomes less about being stranded on an island and more about what you learn once you get there.

"What is here on this island is actually going to start changing people," says Ian Somerhalder, who plays rich kid Boone. "It's nice to see that the experience on this island now is not only terrifying; it's enlightening. It's transformative.

"That's what Damon said over and over again, that the crazy thing about the show -- one of many -- is that all these people on this plane have seen each other before."

"Lost" follows in the tradition of Abrams' earlier shows, "Felicity" and "Alias." In "Felicity," a high-school graduate (Keri Russell) makes an impulsive decision to follow the object of her affection (Scott Speedman) to college in New York and discovers a whole new world both inside and out. In "Alias," what is superficially a spy drama is actually an examination of love, loss and family.

Both these shows inspired passionate devotion and debate among their fans, as do some of Abrams' favorite shows from other producers, including "Star Trek," "The X-Files" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Two "Buffy" writers, David Fury and Drew Goddard, now work on "Lost."

These shows share a willingness to tackle issues of life and death, to ponder philosophical questions and to draw on cultural references ranging from Shakespeare to Saturday morning cartoons. They also offer more questions than answers, leaving viewers to feverishly work their brains to fill in the blanks.

Sometimes a little research helps. For example, in "Lost," Terry O'Quinn (a veteran of "X-Files" and "Alias") plays John Locke, which is also the name of the Enlightenment-era British philosopher who originated the term "tabula rasa," or "blank slate," to describe the unformed state of the mind at birth.

The second episode of "Lost" was called "Tabula Rasa," and Locke has become sort of the island philosopher, moving from character to character. He found the dog belonging to young Walt (Malcolm David Kelley), helped Charlie (Dominic Monaghan) overcome drug addiction and has taken Boone under his wing.

He's also the beneficiary of a miracle. In his flashback, viewers learned that Locke had been in a wheelchair for four years but dreamed of going on walkabout in Australia. When that dream was frustrated, he got on a plane to return home -- only to discover, after the crash, that his useless legs worked. Locke has now become the hunter-warrior of his dreams.

He also saw the giant thing that prowls the island. It may have eaten the plane's pilot, but Locke was unafraid.

"He saw some huge thing coming through the trees," O'Quinn says, "and it came down face to face with him. I talked to Damon Lindelof and said, 'Something is coming through the trees. It's looking at me. Tell me something. Is it something that terrifies me? Is it God? Is it wondrous? Is it horrible?'

"He said, 'All right, I'll tell you it's the most beautiful thing that you've ever seen in your life.'"

Aside from surgeon Jack (Matthew Fox), who had visions of his dead father, Locke may be most aware that the island is not an ordinary dot in the sea, and perhaps the crash was no accident.

"He believes more than anyone," O'Quinn says, "that the island is filled with magic and mysticism and spirituality, even to the point that he has a kind of faith that strengthens all his inclinations. Maybe he can do things simply by believing he can do them.

"Walking was one miracle, and that was a miracle, so who's to say they draw the line at one? John Locke was the one that came up with the idea of tabula rasa, the clean slate, the fresh beginning, which certainly applies to our Locke and to everyone here.

"The island has awakened some sensitivity in him to other people and other things. The miracle that happened to him opened his eyes. It's like the way you hear people talk about having a near-death experience; when they come back into the world, they see it with fresh eyes. That's what happened to Locke."

Abrams and Lindelof have tapped into our fear that, at any moment, the world can be turned upside down, leaving us adrift. It's not a new notion. Stories from "Robinson Crusoe" to "Lord of the Flies" trod just the same ground.

What "Lost" adds to the mix are its flashbacks, showing how the past dogs us into the present, even if we try to escape it.

"On the island," Lindelof says, "you have this chance to reinvent yourself, and the only person who's in on the joke is the audience."

Spoiler Inside!

No More Crying Wolf: Someone is going to die on Lost. Really. Really, really. No, I'm telling you, they're serious this time. Don't believe me? Then maybe you'll listen to the big boss himself, who dished on his hit shows, Lost and Alias, at the Wisteria block party.

"There will definitely be death before the end of the year, and it won't be a dream," JJ Abrams says of Lost. "And it's not going to be a new character that comes on and all of a sudden dies in that episode. We're aware it's not realistic to have all 14 make it, and this is a very hard thing to do for us, because when you know you're going to do a story where someone's gonna have to bite it, you don't want to like any of the actors--because you don't want to have to say goodbye to any of them. And this cast, they're just like family. They're amazing. They're all wonderful."

Which is why what I heard might just kill me. I'm told one character will die at the hands of another. We already know both of them.

When asked if he has broken the news to the doomed castmember, Abrams says, "No, they don't know yet." Yunjin Kim finds that a bit unsettling. "There is talk among us about who will die first and why," she says. "A lot of people don't think it's going to be a girl because there are only four of us. But I don't like to think about it. Losing one of us is just going to make the whole show so different, and you know, if it's me, what are you gonna do?"

Hope it's only a hallucination?

Speaking of, Maggie Grace insists that's the explanation for her appearing so lovey-dovey with costar Ian Somerhalder. "People are thinking that because of our episode. It's transference. We noticed that the day after the episode, because the castpeople thought that...but we're really good friends, the whole cast is." When asked about similar rumors about romance between Evangeline Lilly and Dominic Monaghan, she pauses, then says, "The whole cast is really good friends." Yes, being on the Lost cast has its privileges.

As for any sparkage on the show, Maggie tells me that her "love life is heating up. And also what Locke and Boone find is a pretty amazing storyline." With regard to that Hurley episode I told you about in the spoiler section of this week's chat, Maggie says, "It's so good! We were all waiting for that script to come out. I think it might have been the case of saving the best for last."

And how.

Noch mehr Lost:

Spoiler Inside!

Lost in Love? Don't look now, but some of the cast members on Lost are starting to look like the next Adam and Rachel, Kiefer and Reiko, Carol and Greg (Brady). You catch my offscreen-canoodling drift, right? At least, that's the way things appeared Golden Globes night, when I spotted Evangeline Lilly (Kate) cozying up (lip to lip) with Dominic Monaghan (Charlie), and Ian Somerhalder (Boone) and his onscreen "sis" Maggie Grace (Shannon) looking equally lovey-dovey and attached at the hip the entire night. Of course, it's possible this cast is just friendly. But it does sorta make you go "Hmmm," hmmm?

If you're wondering how Dominic, Ian and Maggie appeared on the Globes carpet when I told you ABC only had tickets for Evangeline and Jorge Garcia (Hurley), I'm told Access Hollywood gave them tickets at the last minute. Seems it's much easier to score tickets when you're on the network where the kudofest was broadcast (NBC).

Dead Castaways Walking: Maggie Grace--who nearly killed us all when she almost died in that episode--told me at the Globes, "It won't always be a close call. I don't think my encounter was the imminent death they're speaking of."

Lost producers Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burke confirmed. "I think it would be sort of against the premise of the show and the promise of the show if we were to make it through the first season and everybody survived of our main fourteen," Lindelof said. "Killing off people that we haven't really seen before is sort of cheap and easy, but I think that it would be very unlikely that all of them would survive into the second season. I can't say who or when, but they're not all gonna make it."

I had to ask. "Could you possibly keep Matthew Fox, Dominic Monaghan and Evangeline Lilly around?"

"Those are the first three to go," D.L. replied. "We're just gonna let the kid, Malcolm David Kelley, and the dog survive. It will be the new Lassie."

Something tells me he may have been kidding.

Achtung Spoiler!

From larrypigtails: Lost! Why do we have to wait so long for new episodes?

See? This is why the new Alias and 24 skeds sorta kick ass, no? Yes, we have to wait, but there is plenty coming up to make it worth it. Claire returns, but that doesn't mean a romantic relationship surfaces between her and Charlie any time soon. There's also sparkage elsewhere on the island (Kate and Sawyer), and we'll learn about another lady in Charlie's life.

From dreahere: Kate and Sawyer? Do tell.

Mmmm-hmmm. They grow closer as we learn that Sawyer and Jack have more in common than you think. As Maggie Grace told me, "You'll see more of the connections between the characters and their pasts, and where our lives intersected before the plane crash." And it is a good twist. Let's just say Sawyer may have something to do with Jack's reason for trekking to Australia.

From elizaldet: Does Hurley win the lottery on Lost?

Baby, you've got his ticket, which, inevitably, is anything but lucky, FYI.

From aver: I don't want Daniel Dae Kim to die on Lost! He's a hunk we can't afford to lose.

Here, here. And though members of the cast were guessing it might be him, the real deal is that no one knows yet. JJ told me so himself. So, hang tight.

From tarheelteacher: From looking at the promo pictures for the next four episodes of Lost, I know none of the main 14 die this week, so whose body they are carrying?

It is someone we have seen before!

Trotzdem bitte was?

Irgendwann nochmal in diesem Jahr.

From boyee: I read your column about someone dying on Lost, and I nearly had a heart attack. Pleeease, I beg of you: Tell me it's not Dominic Monaghan.

It's not. But I can tell you that this person is well-loved, well-featured and, well, doomed. It is one of the 14 series regulars--one of the biggest characters--and the episode is guaranteed to make you bawl your ever-lovin' eyes out.

From tarheelteacher: Male or female who dies on Lost?

Consensus. Should I answer this? Or is it telling too much? Let's vote. Who wants to know?

From lobsters: I want to know! Spill! (Sorry, pregnant-lady hormones got the best of me&#33

Okay, then, out of love and respect for lobsters and her beloved unborn child, I will tell you this: (Do not read if you don't want to know.) It's a boy!

From colin_rip: Wait...a boy? Or a man?

I was just being funny. Don't read too much into that, peeps.

From annsensei: Didn't you already tell us a long time ago that it was a boy?

Yes, I did say that before--that was a spoiler a couple of months ago referencing Ethan about someone we know and love killing another cast member. But now I'm talking about the biggie--the one that hasn't happened yet.

From freakyme: I know you can't tell us exactly who dies--frankly, I don't want to know--but can you tell us how?

Do not read if you don't want to know: Basically, something catastrophic happens, and because someone lies about what happened, the victim ultimately can't be saved.

From brini: Is the medication/schizophrenia thing still going to happen on Lost?

I'm told now that writer-producers decided not to do that storyline. But the original plan, from what I understand, was to have Boone be psychotic and on meds which were running out. But like I said, from what I understand now, that's not gonna happen.

From waterdancer1: What's the dealio with Lost? Are Shannon and Sayid going to go a bit further?

On our local ABC 7 here, they did a whole "Secrets of Lost" shebang, and Naveen Andrews said this when asked about that: "Oh, it's definitely going to happen. I can guarantee you that. I mean, one of the things about this show is that we do push the envelope." Other highlights from castmembers: Ian Somerhalder said, "Something's coming up for my character, and it's definitely going to change the experience of the island, gonna change what we know of the island, and what we think of it, and that's huge." Matthew Fox said, "Jorge's episode will have a sequence of numbers in it that will be very, very significant." Jorge Garcia said, "Look at TV within TV. Wink, nod, that's all you get." Harold Perrineau Jr. said, "I think you should pay really close attention to what Walt does, and the things that happen around Walt."

From jen31cw2: What do you think of the Lost season finale spoiler? I know producers said it was false but close. Any insight?

I think the whole thing is a joke. Here's what I've heard of the finale: We'll go back to the very beginning, when they all boarded the plane. Also...Ha! Love it! Just got a call from a source who wanted to spread this word to you: There's buzz over at camp Lost that there's going to be an episode from the perspective of the dog, Vincent! And it's actually very relevant, because we see what happened in the cargo hold.

From mhs82: So, do we (1) see Claire pop the baby before season's end on Lost, and (2) find out who Ethan was and if there are more like him?

(1) Yes, and let's just say that episode is all about the circle of life, and (2) I do not know.

Inhalt:
Kate and Sawyer divulge dark secrets to each other while tracking a renegade boar that Sawyer swears is purposely harassing him. Meanwhile, Hurley and Sayid worry that Charlie is losing it after his brush with death and shotting Ethan to death in the chest.

Jajaajaaa, ich wittere da was.

I can feel it. The turn of the Earth.
