Standard Season 9? [teilweise mit SPOILERN]

Is the upcoming season of Stargate SG-1 really the show's final year? Not necessarily, if The Sci-Fi Channel can help it.

It's a question that's asked every year, ever since Showtime cancelled the series in 2002, after five seasons. SG-1 got a new lease on life when it was picked up by The Sci-Fi Channel, where it became their highest-rated series. According to a recent article in Multichannel News, Stargate SG-1 currently makes up 22 percent of the cable network's primetime (8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern/Pacific) line-up. In March, the Season Seven finale scored a 2.1 household rating, Stargate's second-highest ever. (The highest, a 2.2, was in January.)

With the arrival of Season Eight in July, Stargate becomes the second-longest running science fiction series in the U.S., after The X-Files -- which ran nine years.

"We love it, we embrace it," Bonnie Hammer, Sci-Fi Channel president, told Multichannel News. "It's such an amazing franchise. I couldn't honestly say to you: Now it's Season Eight and it's over. It just might not be."

Despite the show's strong performance for the network, two significant hurdles stand in the way of its renewal: the budget, and the on-going participation of actor Richard Dean Anderson ("Jack O'Neill").

Stargate SG-1 now costs about $1.7 million per episode according to Multichannel News, a likely factor in Sci-Fi's decision to order 20 episodes this season, rather than the usual 22. The network does not share in additional revenue that the studio earns through syndication and DVD sales. And the network has also invested heavily in the new Battlestar Galactica series, which has kicked off production with a 13-episode order -- and a price tag even higher than SG-1's.

SG-1 executive producer Michael Greenburg thinks the show will go on. "If the demand is there, I think the show will be there. I think it can continue. Sci-Fi's a fairly new network. We're the highest rated show they've ever had. We've broken their records. It just feels like it's too early to go away."

"I don't know if Rick would continue. But who knows? You never know until the offer's on the table. But I think the franchise now is becoming bigger than the people."

MGM and Sci-Fi have developed a spin-off series, Stargate Atlantis in part to take the place of SG-1 when it eventually bids farewell -- but the two shows can certainly co-exist, Greenburg said.

Season Nine could go back to the past

Stargate SG-1 might explore some of its unresolved plot threads from previous seasons, should it get the go-ahead for a ninth season, according to executive producer Michael Greenburg. He hinted to fans at last weekend's London Film and Comic Con that another year -- or multiple years -- of SG-1 is still a possibility, though he did not confirm that Season Nine has been given the go-ahead.

There are still plenty of stories to tell, Greenburg told fans in a panel session that also featured Christopher Judge ("Teal'c"), Dan Shea (stunt coordinator and "Sergeant Siler"), and Greenburg's wife Nikki Smook, who has appeared in the Stargate episodes "Scorched Earth" and "Birthright." "We make a joke about [the Furlings] in an episode at the end of this season," Greenburg said. "You'll see at the end of Season Eight, there's one episode with Homer Simpson in it -- the guy who plays Homer Simpson, Dan [Castellaneta, 'Citizen Joe']. We sort of revisit all those things from the early years that we never really arc'ed around and paid off. See, that's why we need to go nine, 10, 11 -- a few more years."

Judge joked with a questioner who asked him if he was going to write any more episodes for Stargate, commenting, "You're assuming there's another season! Maybe that's a question for Michael Greenburg?"

Greenburg took up the thread with, "Oh, he'll write. He's one of our good writers. He's one of our most talented writers, so when he has time, he writes."

It is possible that a Season Nine will see not only the Furlings revisited, but a return to other story arcs previously left unaccounted for, such as Nicholas Ballard (Jan Rubes), Daniel Jackson's grandfather who was left living off-world with giant mist aliens in the Season Three episode "Crystal Skull." "I hope we have the chance to bring him back," Greenburg saiad. "There is another story that Michael Shanks actually pitched as a sequel to 'Crystal Skull' that is really good. I'd love to give him the opportunity."

Filming on the show's current season has wrapped, though the crew had a few headaches near the end of the season. When asked what is the most expensive prop that has ever been broken on Stargate, Greenburg said that it had just recently happened: "The Stargate, which costs $250,000, broke," he revealed. "That was pretty much the most expensive prop. Ray Douglas, who's head of our special effects department, had to put it back together. We had to not shoot the Stargate for a couple of weeks because it was broken ... and it was about $50,000 to fix."

In a move that surprised some in the television community, The Sci-Fi Channel announced a renewal of both Stargate: SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis today. Stargate: SG-1 is the most successful original television series in the channel's history and its spin-off, Atlantis, has gained a strong audience during its first year.

The success of Atlantis is why there were some raised eyebrows when both series got a renewal. With the renewal, Stargate: SG-1 ties The X-Files for the longest running U.S. SF series. It still has a long way to go before it matches the record of BBC's Doctor Who but 9 seasons is impressive any way you look at it. With SG-1 getting a little long in the tooth, the conventional wisdom was that, should Atlantis gain an audience, it would be time to retire the original series but the success of both series in tandem on Friday nights have been one of the bright spots in Sci-Fi's schedule, possibly leading to renewal. Several members of the cast have said they would be willing to continue the series for as long as series star Richard Dean Anderson wants to keep it alive. Anderson, who has had both a highly successful series (MacGuyver) and a well regarded bomb (the early UPN series, Legend), is someone who obviously knows the value of a good job.

New episodes of both series will air Friday nights starting in January and will be joined by the new Battlestar Galactica series.

I can feel it. The turn of the Earth. The ground beneath our feet is spinning at a thousand miles an hour, the entire planet is hurtling around the sun at sixty-seven thousand miles an hour, and I can feel it. We're falling through space, you and me, clinging to the skin of this tiny little world, and if if we let go... that's who I am.

was is jetzt mit RDA?

9te Staffel.
