Orphaned on the mean streets of Treasure Town, lost boys Black and White must mug, steal and fight to survive. Around them moves a world of corruption and loneliness, small-time crooks and neurotic police officers, and a band of sadistic yakuza who have plans for their once-fair city. Can they rise above their environment, or will the city destroy them? A manga drawn in a surreal style influenced by European comics. This series was originally published in Japan under the name Tekkonkinkurito. Viz Comics has released an english version under the title Black & White.
More Elaborate Introduction:
If there's one word to describe this series, it's bizare. Everything about it is strange, from the unique art style courtesy Taiyo Matsumoto (the creator of the Ping Pong Club manga) to the unusual directing of the manga. Even the two main characters are anything but normal.
This manga chronicles the story of two children raising themselves alone in a bad neighborhood. Black is the more mature of the two, a painfully intelligent young man who has a violent, vicious streak. His best friend is a boy named White, who is mentally retarded. The two have a brotherly relationship that brings out the softer side of the often closed-off Black. However, he also inspires a lot of violence with his tendancy to get beat up on and his love of... well, stolen watches
The two children face threats from both cops and gansters, and somehow avoid either. Black views the city itself as his own personal property, and feels that he has the right to punish anyone within it. White plants apple trees and collects watches, while trying to learn how to count to ten. He can almost do it this time, really!
There's something about this series that's very disturbing, but also very endearing.
