The IGN FilmForce Web site has confirmed that UPN has indeed passed on the "Angel" series, based on an earlier rumor report originating at SyFy Portal.
"Fans behind the Save Angel movement have asked fans to stop sending messages to UPN, further indicating that the future of the series is dim," IGN FilmForce reported. "Co-executive producer Jeffrey Bell told IGN FilmForce last weekend that any decision by UPN would be based on their financial situation. That situation has been in steady decline over the past several years, partially due to an exceptionally high license fee paid by the network to Fox for the rights to 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer's' final season."
SyFy Portal first reported on the rumor earlier this week. (original story)
"The show is just too far in its lifespan to really make decent money on it," a Viacom source told SyFy Portal. "It was a mistake for UPN to grab 'Buffy' so late, and it ended up costing (the network) money."
The WB cancelled "Angel" last month, effective at the end of the current season. In the announcement, The WB said it wanted to give the series a chance to end the way the producers want it to end, and that this would be a fitting way to do it. After the cancellation, the producers apparently opened up talks with UPN, but even at the beginning, some people connected to the show admitted that earning a UPN pickup was a "long shot."
Please note that despite the confirmation from Mutant Enemy, there still has been no official announcement made by anyone, so please treat this as you would any other rumor.
