Lt. The Klingons don't take prisoners.").

Courtesies Normally Extended a Senior

a. A junior, when addressed by a senior, always rises.

b. As a general rule, "sir" or "ma'am" is used in speaking either officially or socially to any senior and is repeated with each complete statement. The proper, natural, and graceful use of "sir" or "ma’am" comes only with exposure and experience. Also, you should not use "sir" or "ma'am" to the point of being overdone. In speaking to a general officer, substitute the word "general" in place of "sir" or "ma'am" whenever you can do so with ease.

...

h. Female officers are to be called "ma'am," not "sir."

i. Warrant officers are addressed as "Mister."
