Asian film fans (and discerning readers of Dave’s Underground, of course) have likely already seen or at least heard numerous mentions of a deservedly acclaimed Korean film called Oldboy from brilliant director Park Chan-wook. A dizzying and brutal revenge tale, the story follows a man seeking payback when he’s released from a mysterious 15-year captivity.
Universal is currently in the process of remaking Oldboy for American audiences, a precarious proposition given the film’s uncompromising and hypnotically bleak nature. Director Justin Lin (Better Luck Tomorrow) has been presented with this significant challenge, but who could possibly take on the role of the hammer-wielding prisoner, portrayed so consummately by Korean star Choi Min-sik?
None other than occasionally manic thespian Nic Cage wants the gig. The actor was recently in Korea to promote National Treasure and meet the parents of his hot 21-year-old Korean-American wife, and declared both his love for kimchi and his desire to star in the stateside update of the vicious Park Chan-wook flick.
I’d sorta pictured Gary Oldman in the role myself, but given Cage’s sedated Raising Arizona role and unhinged work in the likes of Wild at Heart and Vampire’s Kiss, I could certainly envision him in the part. Even if the darker aspects of the remake will likely be extinguished for US audiences, who don’t really deserve the film anyway.
