Actually, I think if Billie Piper is ever going to leave the show, it would be even more disasterous than the exit of Christopher Eccleston. At least for the general public. The show is so focused on Rose that she is now a vital part of the new incarnation of Doctor Who! A new female companion is going to fail miserably if she isn't too different to Rose.

This is what I would do:

- keep Captain Jack, he's different and funny. Now all this guy needs is more background story but that's coming up anyway.

- get the Doctor, Rose and Jack to meet Diana Goddard again. For some story-arc reason or so they are forced to take her with them. This would change the dynamic between the characters drastically. She could be like Whedon's Emma Frost, Lilah in "Angel" or Aeryn in the beginning of "Farscape". Now there's a character to develop!

- as Diana gets more and more comfortable with the adventures, something happens to Rose that makes her leave the Doctor. Since the show slowly transformed the leads from a duo to a "scoobie gang", it won't leave such a big wound if Rose leaves the Doctor.

Can you tell that I loved the character of Diana in "Dalek".
